Where is the serial number on a Specialized bike?

On almost all Specialized bikes, the serial number is stamped into the bottom bracket shell, under the bike between the pedals: that is what Specialized says in its FAQ. Some newer models have it on a non-removable sticker on the down tube, near the bottom bracket. It usually starts with WSBC, WUD, STT or STE. Write it down, photograph it and register it: it is what the police will ask for if your bike is stolen.

Step by step

  1. Turn it over and look under the bottom bracket

Turn the bike upside down or lay it on its side and look at the underside of the bottom bracket shell, the part the pedal axle goes through. Specialized says almost all its serial numbers are there, stamped into the frame. If there is mud or grease, wipe it with a damp cloth.

  2. If it is not stamped, look for a sticker on the down tube

On some newer models, Specialized puts the number on a sticker that cannot be removed, on the down tube (the tube from the handlebar down to the pedals), near the bottom bracket. In the help for its app, Specialized adds that on most bikes it can be found on the top tube or the down tube: if you cannot see it underneath, check those tubes too.

  3. Recognise it by how it starts

According to Specialized, its serial numbers typically start with WSBC, WUD, STT or STE. Copy every character in the same order and watch out for 0 and O or 5 and S. A code that does not start like that may be another label (model, size or production); if in doubt, compare it with the receipt.

  4. Photograph it and register it

Take a close-up photo where the number can be read and another showing where it is on the frame, and keep them with the receipt. Register your Specialized for free on destolen (up to 5 bikes) with the number and the photos: if it is stolen, you will have everything to hand for the police report.

  5. Before buying a used one, check it

If you are buying a Specialized second-hand, ask to see the number on the frame (not just in a photo) and type it into the destolen checker: it is free and you do not need an account. If it is reported stolen, do not buy it and tell the police. If it is not, that only means it does not appear in the sources checked.

What Specialized says

In its FAQ, Specialized explains that almost all its serial numbers are on the bottom bracket shell, stamped into the frame, and that some newer models have a non-removable sticker on the down tube near the bottom bracket instead. It also gives the usual prefixes: WSBC, WUD, STT or STE.

Specialized recommends registering the bike with its serial number and explains that this lets it give the police the owner details if a stolen bike is recovered. That brand registration is separate from destolen: you can have your bike in both.

If the number is worn off or you cannot find it

If it is your bike and you cannot find or read the number, look for it on the receipt or purchase documents, or ask the Specialized shop where you bought it, with your proof of purchase.

If you are buying a bike and the number has been filed off, scratched, painted over or the label has been torn off, do not buy it: it is a red flag. You can tell the police and give them the link to the listing.

If it is a Turbo or another e-bike, also write down the motor and battery numbers: they have their own and can be sold separately.
