What this data doesn't tell you

  • The Mossos d'Esquadra list only includes brand and model: it doesn't say where or when the bike was stolen. Those bikes count towards brands and models, but not towards areas.
  • The areas show where most thefts are recorded in these sources, not across all of Spain or Europe.
  • Many reports don't give the model or spell it differently, so the model ranking has fewer thefts than the brand ranking.
  • We only show groups with at least 10 thefts, so that no individual case can be identified.
  • These are counts of reported thefts, not rates: a brand that sells a lot appears more often even if it isn't easier to steal.
  • We merge the different spellings of a brand (Trek, TREK and trek count together). 1,436 thefts have no recognisable brand.

Don't let it happen to you

Registering your bike is free: if it's stolen, you'll have the serial number and photos at hand to report it and search for it. And if you're buying second-hand, check first that it isn't stolen.
