Is it stolen? Check before you buy

An API for second-hand bike shops, insurers and marketplaces: look up a serial number and know instantly whether it is reported stolen.

What the API does

Two simple checks that fit into your buying, claims or listing process.

Serial number check

Given a bike’s serial number, the API tells you whether it is reported stolen, whether it is marked as recovered or whether it does not appear in our sources, with the source, the date and the area of the theft. It does not matter how the number is written, and on e-bikes the motor and battery numbers also work.

Indicative listing score

It combines the serial number with the price (against reference prices for the same make and model) and with the seller details you send us, and returns a risk score with a recommendation. It helps you decide; it is not a verdict.

A bike not appearing in our sources does not guarantee it is not stolen.

Sources

Theft reports from public police sources, international stolen bike registries with European data and bikes their owners mark as stolen on destolen. They are updated regularly.

No personal data

The API does not return the owner’s name, contact details, exact address or photos. We do not store the serial numbers you check or the content of the listings.

Important information

Destolen is a technological tool for monitoring and detection on marketplaces. We provide automated alerts and information, but we do not perform physical recovery of items nor act as private investigators.

We always recommend:

  • Contact the competent authorities (local police, law enforcement)
  • Do not confront sellers directly without police accompaniment
  • Verify the legality of any recovery action
  • Use alerts as information for official reports

Destolen is a private, independent service: it is not part of the police or of any public body and does not act on their behalf.
