Where is the serial number on a Cannondale bike?

On modern Cannondale bikes, the serial number is on a barcode label on the underside of the frame, usually under the bottom bracket, between the pedals. It has 7 characters: 2 letters and 5 numbers. On e-bikes with a mid-drive motor it is usually behind the motor on the seat tube, or in front of the motor on the down tube. That is what Cannondale explains in its help centre.

Step by step

  1. Look for the barcode label under the bottom bracket

Lay the bike down or turn it over and look at the underside of the bottom bracket, between the pedals: Cannondale puts a label there with a barcode of vertical lines and the serial number.

  2. Check the format: 2 letters and 5 numbers

According to Cannondale, the serial number has exactly 7 characters, 2 letters followed by 5 numbers, and comes with a barcode, not a QR code. Other labels on the down tube with numbers in other formats or with QR codes are not the serial number.

  3. If it is an e-bike, look next to the motor

On Cannondale e-bikes with a mid-drive motor, the label is usually behind the motor on the seat tube, or in front of the motor on the down tube, depending on the model.

  4. Photograph it and register it

Take a close-up photo where the number can be read and another showing where it is on the frame, and keep them with the receipt. Register your Cannondale for free on destolen (up to 5 bikes) with the number and the photos: if it is stolen, you will have everything to hand for the police report.

  5. Before buying a used one, check it

If you are buying a Cannondale second-hand, ask to see the number on the frame (not just in a photo) and type it into the destolen checker: it is free and you do not need an account. If it is reported stolen, do not buy it and tell the police. If it is not, that only means it does not appear in the sources checked.

What Cannondale says

In its help centre, Cannondale explains that its modern bikes have the serial number on the underside of the frame, usually under the bottom bracket, on a barcode label. The number has 2 letters and 5 numbers, 7 characters in total, and Cannondale warns that other labels with other formats or with QR codes are not the serial number.

On e-bikes with a mid-drive motor, the label is usually behind the motor on the seat tube or in front of the motor on the down tube. Older Cannondale bikes may have it elsewhere: the brand has a separate list of older locations in the same help centre.

If the label is missing or cannot be read

If it is your bike, look for the number on the receipt or ask the Cannondale shop where you bought it, with your proof of purchase.

If you are buying a used Cannondale and the serial number label has been torn off or does not match the format of 2 letters and 5 numbers, be suspicious: ask for the receipt and, if the seller cannot explain where the bike comes from, do not buy it.
