Guide
What to do after your bike is stolen, by country
Report the theft as soon as possible to the police of the country where your bike was stolen, with the serial number (or marking number), photos and the receipt, and tell your insurer as your policy requires. Choose the country (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland or the United Kingdom) to see where to report it, whether you can do it online, which official register or marking exists and what destolen offers there. We only give the procedures we have checked in official sources.

In any country
Gather the details and documents
Your ID, the receipt or any proof of purchase, the frame serial number (and, for an e-bike, the motor and battery numbers) or the marking number, photos of the bike and any detail that sets it apart. Note where and when you left it, when you noticed it was gone and which lock it had. If you have seen a listing, keep the link and screenshots.
Where to find the serial numbersReport it to the police of the country where it was stolen
Do it as soon as possible: the police report is what the police (if they recover the bike) and your insurer will ask for. Choose the country below to see where to report it and whether you can do it online. Give the serial number and keep the copy or the number of the report.
Tell your insurer
If you have insurance that covers the bike (bike, home or other), notify them as your policy says: deadlines, documents (many ask for the police report) and whether it covers thefts away from home or abroad.
Mark it as stolen in the registers
If it was in an official register or marking scheme, follow what that register says. If it was registered on destolen, report it under «My bike was stolen»: the checker will then warn anyone who looks up its serial number.
My bike was stolenTell what you see from what you assume
The same model is not the same bike. If you see a similar listing, compare the serial number and the details only yours has (dents, replaced parts, stickers). Do not contact the seller or try to get it back yourself: take the listing link, screenshots and your police report to the police.
Choose the country of the theft
Spain
Where to report it
At a Policía Nacional station, a Guardia Civil post or the regional police (in Catalonia, the Mossos d'Esquadra). If the theft is happening now, call 091 or 112.
Reporting online
With the Policía Nacional you can start the report online if there was no physical violence or threats, you do not know and could not recognise the thief, and you are an adult. At the end you get a number and must sign the report at the station of your choice within 72 hours at most: until you sign it, it has no legal effect. In Catalonia, the Mossos d'Esquadra have a similar procedure (no physical violence and no details of the thief), also signed at a station within 72 hours. The Guardia Civil accepts reports of thefts, among others, through its electronic office.
Official register or marking
Biciregistro is a national, voluntary bike registration and identification system, owned by the Red de Ciudades por la Bicicleta, with the DGT and the participating city councils. If your bike is on Biciregistro, report the theft and add it to its list of missing bikes: if it is located, the owner is notified. If it is an e-scooter (VMP): since 2026, VMPs must be insured and registered with the DGT, online at its electronic office; you then get a registration number and a digital certificate. If it is stolen, give that number and the serial number in the report. The DGT's official note does not yet explain what happens to the registration of a stolen VMP.
What else to bring
If you started the report online, take the number you got at the end of the form to the station.

France
Where to report it
At a police station. Even if you report online, you can always go to the police station.
Reporting online
Plainte en ligne (PEL), from the French Ministry of the Interior, lets you report a bike theft online, logging in with FranceConnect or a username and password. Barring special circumstances, it should be processed within about 7 days; you then download the report (procès-verbal) from your personal space. Download and keep it: your insurer will ask for it and the platform deletes reports after 6 months. If you cannot get the report, ask the police station handling your complaint.
Official register or marking
Since 31 July 2021, new or used bikes sold by a professional must carry anti-theft marking: a unique number engraved on the frame (for example, Bicycode) and recorded in a national database, which helps the police return stolen bikes. If your bike is marked, give that number in your report.
What else to bring
For the report to be useful, the police ask for specific details: the exact place (street, garage, hallway, storage room), the time window, the marking number if any and the type of lock.

Germany
Where to report it
At any police station, by phone or online. Anyone who knows of the offence can report it and no documents are required, although you can attach photos, the receipt or screenshots. If you see the thief or locate your bike with a GPS tracker, do not chase them yourself: call 110.
Reporting online
Each federal state (Land) has its own online police station (Online-Wache): choose the state where your bike was stolen and the theft form. You will get an email with the case number and contact details. If the theft happened in another state or abroad, the report is forwarded to the right authority.
Official register or marking
There is no compulsory national register. The police recommend noting the frame number (or coding number) in a bike passport (Fahrradpass), on paper or in a free app, and having the bike coded: a personal code engraved on the frame that lets the police find the owner's address. Shops, the ADFC cycling club and some insurers offer it if you show proof of ownership.
What else to bring
The bike passport (Fahrradpass) with the frame or coding number.

Austria
Where to report it
At the nearest police station (Polizeiinspektion).
Reporting online
The official source we consulted does not mention reporting a bike theft online: go to the police station.
Official register or marking
We have not found a national bike register in official sources. The police recommend the bike passport (Fahrradpass), available at police stations or as a download from the Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt): with the frame number, colour, brand and model noted down, the police can return a recovered bike to its owner.
What else to bring
The bike passport (Fahrradpass) with the frame number.

Switzerland
Where to report it
At a cantonal police post or online. In Basel-Stadt, if it was stolen from locked private premises, contact the cantonal police directly so they can secure evidence.
Reporting online
In many cantons, bike thefts are reported online on Suisse ePolice, the Swiss police online police post. It is only for minor offences by an unknown perpetrator (not if you have concrete leads), and you must be 18 or over, have an email address and live in Switzerland or a neighbouring country. It is free: you get a confirmation by email and can download the report as a PDF. Some cantons, such as Basel-Stadt, have their own online police post.
Official register or marking
There is no compulsory national register. In Basel-Stadt, the police offer the Velo-Vignette: a sticker with a QR code to register the bike for free; if it turns up, you are notified.
What else to bring
The frame number, make and model, colour, the name of your home contents insurer, proof of purchase if you have it, and an ID document.

Belgium
Where to report it
At your local police station, as soon as possible (in some zones, by appointment). You will get a declaration number and a theft certificate: keep them.
Reporting online
The Belgian police say you can report your bike theft online, on Police-on-Web, or at the police station. The official pages we consulted do not give further conditions.
Official register or marking
Mybike is the national bike register: it is free, you register the bike online and they post you a sticker with a unique QR code for the frame. The police also recommend engraving your national register number on the frame, which lets them find your name and address (some municipalities engrave it for free). Found bikes are kept for three months: if you recognise yours, go to the police station with proof of ownership, such as a photo or the receipt.
What else to bring
All the information you can: photos, frame number, receipt and the bike passport if you have one.

Netherlands
Where to report it
First, check that the municipality has not removed it (for example, as an abandoned bike): look up your municipality's bike depot (fietsdepot) on its website. Then report it to the police (politie). If you are not sure how, call the general police number, 0900-8844.
Reporting online
You can report it by phone or with the police online form. The official page we consulted does not give conditions for doing it online.
Official register or marking
You do not need to add it to another register: when you report it, your bike is automatically entered in the bike theft register (fietsdiefstalregister), which the police use to find the owners of the bikes they recover. The RDW lets you check whether a bike is reported stolen.
What else to bring
The frame or chip number: only with a report that includes it can the police give your bike back. If you do not have it, give as many features as you can, such as the brand, type and colour.
What destolen offers in Netherlands
- Registering your bike: free, with photos, serial number and certificate.

Luxembourg
Where to report it
At the police station or public prosecutor's office (Parquet) of your choice, or online.
Reporting online
You can report a bike theft online on MyGuichet.lu if you do not know who did it, nobody was injured, there was no violence and there are no usable physical traces. At the end you choose a police station, as you may need to go there. The electronic copy of your statement is not valid as a certificate for your insurer: the police draw up a report (procès-verbal) that goes to the prosecutor's office, and the copy the prosecutor sends you is the one you can give your insurer.
Official register or marking
We have not found a national bike register in official sources. The police app lets you store the frame number, make, colour, photos and receipts, to pass them quickly to the police if the bike is stolen.
What else to bring
In the online report you can attach photos and proof of purchase.

Ireland
Where to report it
At a Garda station, as soon as possible and with the serial number (usually under the bike, near the pedals). In an emergency, call 999 or 112.
Reporting online
An Garda Síochána has an online theft declaration for thefts of property in Ireland (excluding Northern Ireland) that you have not already reported. It is not for burglaries, vehicle thefts, robbery with force or threats against a person, or violent crime: for those, go to a Garda station. The page does not mention bikes; if in doubt, go to the station. At the end you can print the details; afterwards you cannot view or change them.
Official register or marking
The official sources we consulted do not mention a national bike register. The Gardaí publish, by division, recovered bikes that nobody has claimed; many cannot be returned because the owner did not record the serial number.
What else to bring
Photos of the bike also saved off your phone (for example, in the cloud or in an email to yourself).
What destolen offers in Ireland

United Kingdom
Where to report it
In Scotland, to Police Scotland: ask for the crime reference number, because your insurer will ask for it. In England, Thames Valley Police say the theft is reported online at police.uk or by calling 101.
Reporting online
Police Scotland has an online form to report a bike theft. In England, police.uk lets you report crimes and stolen items online. The official sources we consulted do not give conditions for doing it online.
Official register or marking
BikeRegister is the bike register recommended by Police Scotland and Thames Valley Police. Police Scotland ask you to mark the bike as stolen there, even if it was not registered, and to download your proof of ownership. They also advise telling your insurer quickly (ideally within 24 hours) and, if you see your bike for sale, not trying to buy it back: call 101.
What else to bring
For your insurer: the policy number, the crime reference number and proof of ownership.

Why not every country has the same detail
We only explain where and how to report a theft when we have checked it in an official source, which we link for each country. If a country does not have that detail yet, report the theft to the local police where your bike was stolen and ask them whether it can be done online and whether there is a bike register.
Have your bike's details ready
Register your bike for free with photos and serial number: if it is stolen, you will have everything at hand to report it and search for it. And before buying a used one, check its serial number.
